Jyunishi Comedy #113

Hey, summer's here!

[In order to gain something

Or to know something

It may be that something must be sacrificed or hurt
In order to do so.

Somehow]

[That's rather sad]

We start of the chapter at Kaibara HS as Yuki tells Tohru that he won't be needing dinner that night. Apparently, Kakeru had suddenly invited him over for dinner that night. Tohru smiles and wishes him a good time, to which Yuki flashes back to what Kakeru had told him earlier about Tohru's mother's accident:

...Her

The cause of her mother's accident was

That the car Komaki's father was in

Ran into her

Her father was killed instantly...

Yuki then meets up with Kakeru who'd been waiting for him and calls him over. Kakeru complains mildly about Yuki taking so long, but since the invite was so sudden, Yuki had a number of things to take care of before going. Kakeru explains that the timing was right that day; Komaki didn't work and his noisy mother had to work late and... meat was on special that day.

Kakeru then goes on to explain how Komaki's love for meat was unparalleled and he dubs her a "meat angel". Yuki tells Kakeru that he really shouldn't give weird impressions of a person especially before he's had a chance to meet them, but Kakeru exclaims that it's not weird. And that Komaki's the type that would be able to eat steak for breakfast...

Yuki then asks Kakeru if Komaki's aware that he has ties to Tohru and Kakeru tells him not to worry about it and that he told her they were "friends".

Kakeru: How's Honda-san?
Since then?

Yuki: .........
Honda-san's also the same as always.

Yuki: ...Smiling

Even that day

The same as always

Kakeru: Hmm

Yuki: *ha* (realises)

But that doesn't mean she didn't think anything of it or anything like that!!

Kakeru: I didn't say anything.

...And I understand

Now.
Seeming unhappy or not

Or laughing foolishly without reason; it's not like she was doing that.

Yuki: Yeah...

Kakeru: But

...Until just recently

I didn't understand that though.

...But then, I'd never thought about it either.

Kakeru flashes back on the day Komaki had gone to offer incense to Kyoko and he'd told Tohru not to delude herself thinking that she was the more unfortunate and that she carried all the unhappiness. Komaki hadn't heard what he'd said to Tohru at that time and so, when he told her what he'd said later, she was very surprised.

Kakeru tells her that he couldn't stand seeing Tohru standing there looking unhappy. And that it was as though Tohru was the more unfortunate and that her unhappiness was greater than Komaki's even though Komaki had also lost her father and was going through difficult times.

So when Komaki started crying from what he'd said, Kakeru was very surprised. Komaki understood that Kakeru had said what he did for her sake, but putting people's unhappiness on a scale and deciding who was the more unfortunate, and winning in that way, didn't make her happy.

Until this time, Kakeru had always assumed that the person he'd come to like so much saw the same things from the same perspective as he did, and felt the same way about them. So Komaki crying, and his not understanding why, was a total shock to him. Yuki asks if it had made him feel lonely, and Kakeru realises that was indeed what he'd felt. But he's been learning and is still learning little by little.

At the apartment, Komaki runs out greeting Kakeru and Yuki as she couldn't wait to meet him.

Komaki: Nice to meet you. I'm Nakao Komaki.

Yuki: Ah
Nice to meet you. I'm Sohma...
You're cute.

Komaki: EH!!?

Kakeru: See-? Isn't he clueless?

Yuki then goes on to explain how Kakeru had told him how she really likes meat and had called her a "meat angel" just a short while ago. Kakeru flees, but Komaki runs after him and hits him. She's a little put out by Kakeru's habit of calling people weird things and tells Yuki not to worry about it. Komaki then asks if Kakeru being that way every day wasn't a bother, but Yuki reassures her that he's pretty much gotten used to him now. ^^;

Komaki: Sohma-kun too, things are really difficult for you... I'm sorry.
I've heard... a little about your situation.

Yuki: Eh?

Komaki: If there's anything I can do, please tell me!

Afterall, we're both girls so I want to help!!

Komaki: But you're really something Sohma-kun.
I can really see you as a guy so: no problems

.........
...

...Eh?

...Because of your family situation
Dressing as a guy

At school

Kakeru: That was a lie

Komaki can't apologise enough to Yuki after that and Kakeru remarks to Yuki how she's so cute believing anything. Yuki can only wish he'd show some remorse.

Kakeru then goes off to change but before leaving makes it very clear that they're not to peep.

After Kakeru leaves, Yuki asks Komaki if Kakeru's like that at home too, and she admits that that's the case. She goes on to explain how in Junior HS he was completely different and hardly ever spoke. Yuki's really surprised and Komaki explains how he'd apparently always looked really angry and was hard to approach, but after Kakeru's family situation had been resolved, he'd come to be the way he is now. And apparently everyone at school had been shocked by the complete turnaround in his personality.

When asked if they'd started going out around that time:

Komaki: Yes, that's right.

...I'd thought it was only on my part so

...I was really happy.

Kakeru-kun's... really kind.
He always tries to understand me

And tries to protect me

Occasionally we fight too but
I think that has meaning too.

Kakeru interrupts the two calling them an "idiot couple" (bakappuru = ba(ka) couple). Embarrassed, Komaki decides to get started on dinner instead. Yuki offers to help out while Kakeru asks what was for dinner to which Komaki answers "grilled... ... meat"

And promptly yells at both of them whether a strange word didn't perchance come to mind at that point. Both Yuki and Kakeru deny it but...

Kakeru then flashes back to the conversation he'd had with Tohru that day

In order to reach it

There were things
That were stepped on but

Tohru: ...

I'm sorry about...
Not... remembering...

Kakeru: ...Don't worry about it
It's alright.

To tell the truth, there were times when it annoyed me but that

Was just me being presumptious.

That time; no doubt it took all you had just to stand.

...That time.

Saying that sort of thing.

I'm sorry.

I got in trouble from Komaki too.

I wasn't thinking
And there were many things

I didn't understand...

But now, just a little

Little by little
I've come to understand... I think.

Kakeru then rather self-consciously goes on to tell Tohru that Komaki's doing well and that it seems that she's also doing well and that he's glad.

Tohru tells Kakeru that it seems that recently Yuki seems to really be enjoying himself and smiles/laughs a lot and says that it's because he'd met Kakeru.

Somehow

It really made me want to cry.

I knew that smile

Very well

[Not for oneself
But for someone else's sake

That someone other than one self]

Would not feel sad.

After dinner, Yuki thanks Komaki and Kakeru for dinner and Kakeru asks him if he'll be okay going home alone. Yuki tells him it's all right as he remembers the way, but Kakeru says that's not what he meant.

Kakeru: Afterall, you're a girl so it's dangerous!

Komaki: EH

Yuki: I see. Thank you!

And so Yuki says good night to Komaki...

Komaki can only exclaim how much fun the evening had been and how beautiful Yuki is. Kakeru on the other hand can only comment how strong Yuki is. ^^; And Komaki then goes on to remark how Kakeru's "good teacher" is a really good person to which Kakeru agrees.

Kakeru: ...He's a good person who'd been supported

By Honda-san.

Komaki comments she's really glad to have been able to meet him and wonders if she'll be able to see him again. Kakeru tells her that no doubt she will and comments how Machi being Machi... if they (Machi and Yuki) were to get together then they'd be relatives... However, there's not much progress since they're both so clueless. ^^;

And at the end of the chapter, Kakeru's mother hears from Komaki that a beautiful boy had been over. She then yells at Kakeru about bringing home a bishounen on a day she had to work late and that no doubt he'd done it deliberately. Kakeru yells back that he had indeed done it deliberately and he'd done it because her being that way, was too embarrassing so he didn't want to introduce her. Komaki can only watch the two and tell them that they'll get in trouble from the landlord again...
